Az értékpapír–kereskedés csak 1760-ban kezdődött, de rövid időn belül igen nagy forgalmat bonyolítottak le. Hivatalosan 1802-ben alapították a világhírű Stock Exchange-t, amely mindmáig egy magántársaság tulajdona, s amelynek életébe az állam csak a legszükségesebb esetekben avatkozott be.
