Martfű, a cipőgyár felépülése előtt tanyaközpont volt, uradalmakkal, ahol a fő kereseti lehetőség a napszám volt. Az uradalmak földjein általában fejlett gazdálkodás folyt. Mariháza a Kövér család birtokához tartozott, Kövér Miklós, miután felhagyott a családi gazdálkodással színházigazgató lett Mariházy Miklós néven.
