A félszáraz gyepek magas természetvédelmi értéket képviselnek mind nemzetközi mind európai léptékben, a biológiai sokféleségük és fajgazdagságuk miatt. A hatékony megőrzésük érdekében -mivel változatos a florisztikai összetételük és eloszlásuk- szükséges leírni őket. Magyarországon jelenleg nincs átfogó jelentés és felmérés a félszáraz legelők esetében. Ebből adódóan, a jelen vizsgálat célja az volt, hogy leírja a variációkat egy országos méretű klaszter alapján és egy nagy adatbázist hozzon létre, leírja a típusokat és összehasonlítsa a leírásokat a cönológiai irodalommal és végül kidolgozásra kerüljön egy szüntaxonómiai rendszer a magyar félszáraz legelők vonatkozásában.

Semi-dry grasslands are of high nature conservation interest both at national and European scales due to their high biodiversity and species richness. For effective conservation, however, the variation in floristic composition and distribution of these grasslands need first to be described. In Hungary, there is currently no comprehensive survey and classification of semi-dry grasslands. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe the variation in species composition of Hungarian semi-dry grasslands by a country-scale cluster analysis based on a large database; describe the types (clusters) and compare these descriptions with those in the phytosociological literature, and finally formulate a new syntaxonomical system for Hungarian semi-dry grasslands.
