A város nevét először 1228-ban említik. 1330-tól esperesség székhelye. A 14. században felépül gótikus evangélikus temploma, mely a legnagyobb templom a környéken. A 15. század elején mezővárosi státust kapott. Itt választják fejedelemmé Kemény Jánost 1661-ben. 1848. november 2-án a helyi székelyek és szászok közt kitört harcokban a város a lángok martaléka lett.
