Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque (Sultan Ahmed Mosque) face each other on Sultanahmet Square. Built by Sultan Ahmed I in the 17th century, it takes its name from the blue tiles of Iznik, a name not used by the Turks themselves. With its 8 domes and 6 minarets, it precedes the Hagia Sophia, underlining the grandeur of Ottoman architecture.
