A kistáj 200–400 m tszf-i átlagmagasságú, D-i, DK-i csapású völgyekkel felszabdalt medencedombság. Ez az utóbbi sajátossága szerkezeti morfológiai fejlődéstör-ténetének eredménye. A domborzat mint medence főként neogén üledékeivel egy korábbi akkumulációs periódus eredménye, mint dombság pedig a plio-pleisztocén eróziós-deráziós folyamatok terméke. A felsőkrétáig viszonylag egységesen fejlődő, tönkösödött felszínt a larámi fázissal kezdődően jelentős tektonikus hatások érték (pl. a Rudabányai-hegységnek a Szendrői-hegységre történő rátolódása), amelynek következményeként a megsüllyedt redők közén fiatal medencék keletkeztek.

The contribution focuses on physical geographical features of two microregions: those of the Putnok Hills and the Sajó Valley, with a special reference to the evaluation of the man-induced changes. The Putnok Hills are basin hills situated between 200 to 400 altitudes a.s.l. dissected by valleys of south– southeast orientation. The basin character has been created during an earlier period dominated by accumulation, while the hill feature is a result of Plio-Pleistocene erosional-derasional processes. On the slightly sloping planes adjoining the mountain frame constituted by carbonates, alluvial fans had been built by water courses from Sarmatian and Pliocene sediments as an initial stage of foothill formation (Fig. 1). The Putnok Hills eventually became a hill region dissected by terraced valleys as a consequence of the uplift during the Plio-Pleistocene, which is estimated about 100 m. Mass movements along the slopes have played a decisive role in the formation of the present-day topography. Most of the area is covered by brown forest soils as a substituting facies of loess (Fig. 2). Fertility of these soils is limited by acid reaction and degradation by erosion.
