Kata negyvenes éveinek elején járó, özvegy vidéki munkásasszony. Magánya, érzelmi üressége oldásaképpen, saját felelősségére gyereket szeretne családos szeretőjétől. A férfi nem akar bonyodalmakat. Egy napon egy szökött intézeti lány keres Katánál menedéket. Őszinte, bizalmas kapcsolat alakul ki közöttük. Anna anyahiánya, szeretetéhsége rádöbbenti Katát, változtatnia kell életén. Segít a lánynak, hogy megszabadulhasson az intézettől, és férjhez mehessen ahhoz, akit szeret. Ő pedig örökbe fogad egy csöpp intézeti lányt.

Kata is a working woman from the country. She is a widow in her early forties. As a remedy to her loneliness and emptiness, she would like to have a child with her married lover. The man, however, does not want any complications. One day, a girl, escaping from the juvenile correctional institute, seeks shelter at her place. Their relationship is getting to be more and more intimate, sincere and confident. Anna's want of mother and love makes Kata realise that she has to change her life. She helps the girl to get rid of the institute and marry the man she loves. Kata then adopts a little girl from the same institute.
