A Boltmúzeum története akkor kezdődött, amikor a Békéscsaba és Vidéke ÁFÉSZ Megyei Szövetsége 1987-ben gyűjtőmunkát indított szaktörténeti emlék megmentésére. A szakgyűjtemény anyagát a Magyar Kereskedelmi és Vendéglátóipari Múzeum is kiegészítette, így nyílt lehetőség arra, hogy 1989. június 6-án a Múzeum megnyílt a nagyközönség előtt, az ÁFÉSZ-ek Szövetsége békéscsabai székházában (MESZÖV Tanácsköztársaság u.). Az évek során különböző külső hatások nehezítették a Múzeum fenntartását ezért került sor arra, hogy a békéscsabai Kereskedelmi és Vendéglátóipari Szakképző Iskolába került át a szakgyűjtemény, hiszen a Múzeum sehol nincs olyan jó és megfelelő helyen, mint egy kereskedelmi iskolában. 1996. február 29-én ünnepélyes keretek között a békéscsabai Kereskedelmi és Vendéglátóipari Szakképző Iskolában megnyílt a Boltmúzeum. A Boltmúzeum hűen tükrözi az 1920-as és 1930-as évek kereskedelmi egységét. A berendezése egy egykori Hangya szövetkezeti boltból származik. Jelenleg (2014) újrarendezve a Zwack József Kereskedelmi és Vendéglátóipari Tagiskolában látható.
