The role of con text in the behaviour of suffix-attracting postpositions in Hungarian Hungarian postpositions can be divided into two groups: plain postpositions (PPPs) and suffix-attracting postpositions (SAPPs). The main difference between the two is that PPPs can only follow the nouns they govern, while SAPPs are generally very mobile (e.g., eltekintve vmitől 'apart from sg'; közel vmihez 'close to sg'). However some of them have completely fixed back position (e.g., vmiből kifolyólag 'in consequence of sg', vmire vonatkozóan 'relating to, in respect of sg'). The current study, using the MNSz corpus, focuses on the connection between the semantics and position of the SAPP (+ noun construction ), and on the role of con text in the use of these constructions. It will be shown that collocations have astrong infiuence on the possible positions of their SAPPs, but their frequency also carries significant consequences.
