The notion of the world formation in the teaching of Finnish language Language use, in a simplified approach, is the assigning of elements in our mental lexicon according to certain rules. In the mind of a language learner the acquisition of a foreign language - to pursue the simplification further - is the summary of words and rules to be mastered. The possibility for creativity seems to be emerging on the level of syntax, ie. sentence-creation, when the speaker is able to create an endless number of sentences freely varying the available elements of vocabulary considering nevertheless their semantic characteristics. Creativity emerging on the level of morphology, ie. compound and word formation are rarely discussed in connection with foreign language acquisition. My paper, wich is limited to word-formation, gives a short overview to how widelyand at what stage Finnish language textbooks examine word formation. My view is that this particular method of word creation is rather neglected. 1 discuss about the nati on of productivity and give examples to illustrate significance of supplying the most preci se characteristics of derivative affixes as to their basic word.
