Grammar and context: nominativization as a reactive process The relationship between grammar and context is generally, if tacitly, seen as a case of the latter influencing the farmer. It is, however, possible to imagine the opposite scenario, in so far as logical thought (and perhaps the view of the world that it helps create) may be seen as belonging to the domain of 'context' . As a matter of fact there is little opti on but to do this, since there are several of examples of the grammaticalization of the effort to be logically clear. In this paper, however, the influence will be assumed to take place in the direction grammar -- context, that is to say as a by-product of the process of norninativization. By this term 1 mean the process of the evolution of the nominative as a case and thus a fundamental factor in sentence construction. In the course of this there come into being subject-predicate sentences which do not correspond to the construction of reality (tautological sentences, e.g. Hungarian esik az eső 'falls the falling (thing)' = 'it is raining', pseudo- or dummy subjects, as in it is raining, il pleut, es regnet in Indo-European, etc.) The existence of such grammatical structures supports the logical view that the world consists of 'substances', and their 'accidences'; and 'usage' should be in line with this. (That is to say, here first gramm ar influences context and then vice versa). Interestingly, Finnish resists this challenge at a number of points in its grammar. One of the distinctive results of norninativization, the genuinely passive construction, has not arisen in the course of its evolution. In expressions such as sataa lunta the noun has not become the grammatical subject. Such conservatism must also be partly responsible for the form of the accusative syncretizing with the nominative (in syntagms with the imperative, the infinitive and the so-call ed passive): the nominative has not crystallized to the extent that object of the verb should need to be expressed exclusively by the accusative or the partitive case. The phenomena discussed are of equal interest from the point of view of grammar, context, and typology.
