Kalevala translated by Imre Szente. Social and cultural impIications on translation The translation performed by 1. Szente is the latest complete translation among the hungarian translations of Kalevala. The first translation of Kalevala was the achievement of Ferdinand Barna in 1871. This was followed by the translations of Béla Vikár (1909), Kálmán Nagy (1972), István Rácz (1976) and Imre Szente (1987). The translation of Szente was published for the first time in Munich, Germany in 1987. It was published in Hungary only in 2001, in Szombathely and in 2002, in Budapest. Szente's Kalevala is the rewriting in Hungarian of classicaI Lönnrot's Kalevala, in the meaning that is used by Lefevere. Lefevere views rewriting as "the adaptation of a work of literature to a different audience with the intention of influencing the way in which that audience reads the work"(qtd. in Aksoy Translation as rewriting, 2001). In my opinion, the same inf1uence is ref1ected in the language and in the manner of presentation of the translation realized by Szente.
